First Steps With A Camera

'Watch Yourself'
2011

My first look into film practically was my two years of A Level. 'Watch Yourself' was a piece of course work for my second year and my first short film.

Short Film
Innovative Cinematography Techniques such as those used in Thomas Alfredson's 'Let The Right One In' 2008. Techniques to build tension used in the Psychological Horror genre such as music and camera angles.
To explore the use of a psychological 'monster' and how Cinematic Techniques can be used to create this.

A representation of human compulsion to direct their attention and worry to a distraction, instead of focusing on what should be the main priority (which is often ourselves).

Annabel wakes to a day that seems perfectly normal, she even has the perk of the day off, but little does she understand that all around her people are being 'taken' and the most important thing to do is watch yourself.

I used a lot of extreme close ups and unusual camera angles

Such as this underwater shot

Using these 'hidden' shots gives a sense of voyeur,
suggesting that 'Annabel' is being watched.

I played with overlaying footage.
Transforming the silhouetted figure into 'Annabel'

Fading her into nothing at the end of the short

I have improved a lot since this short. Gaining plenty of experience and footing in this 'world' of which I will get back onto of this blog and start talking about the work I have done.

Word And Image Association 1

What comes to mind whenever we hear a word or see an image/representation or the subject it's self? Playing on a similar idea as 'One And Three Chairs' by Joseph Kosuth and Semiotics.

Visually communicate the semiotic word association we have with common day objects such as a book or a glass of water. What the dictionary definition of these objects are can be completely different from what they mean to us personally or cultural. Although I am using language in my art I am using it to back up or to be backed up by visual communication, it is the visual which is most dominating and though the words I use can be strong they are only able to be so with the visuals.

Shape, Pattern & Texture

Two pieces from my final GCSE year of photography on Shape, Pattern and Texture. I worked solely with film but because of this unfortunately the digital copy of my photographs doesn't have the same feel or quality that the original image has.

Into: In our everyday surroundings patterns, shape and textures are repeated constantly. They can often change the way we feel about places when photographing them. In this project I have explored how shape, pattern and texture is repeated in a range of locations.

I have looked at man-made building and natural occurrences, and have also looked at how weather and time of day can affect locations.

I hope to show how shape, pattern and texture can change the feel of a location or mood. I want to show how the same building can look and feel very different when observed from different viewpoint.

First Photograph: This photograph is high key at eye level. I took this photograph because it shows the texture of bricks and the wooden bench. The pattern of the bricks is repeated though out the photograph, the lines of the windows, and wall and the bench makes the eye focus on the end of the line of the windows at vanishing point in the background giving it a large depth of field and a large sense of perspective. The weather was nice when I took the shot so I only needed a short shutter speed. The left image I printed with the negatives the right way up, the other the wrong way up, giving me two opposite perspectives. This gives a completely different affect to the viewer as it make them questioning the image and forces them to look at it in a unnatural way.

Second Photograph: In the center of the photograph is a bike leaning against a wall facing the camera diagonally that stretches almost all the way across the photograph to vanishing point. The pattern of the tiles on the floor also pulls the eye back to vanishing point. The photograph is taken from eye level. I also had to use a long shutter speed as there was little light because of the weather. Because of this my film for very pale and I had to use a filter when print my photographs.

Dried flower - Detail

Dried flower - Detail by J C Claxton
Dried flower - Detail, a photo by J C Claxton on Flickr.
Dried rose covered in dust, the beautiful delicate detail of the rose caught my eye. Rose petals have always reminded me of cloth, this one might be an old forgotten dress but loved when found again.
I know I always forget about it but love finding it again.

Another experiment with light and model houses.

Another experiment I did for my A2 photography exam project. I was interested in manipulating the form of the paper houses using light, I also wanted to create a sense of emptiness, loneliness and armageddon. I used plain white model house with black and white photography to add the effect I wanted.

My experiments at this time were influenced by photographs like Daniele Del Elnero who makes paper model house out of black paper and photographs them after they have decayed.
